Dear readers,

many thanks to all of you for your interest and patience concerning my articles.  I will now ‘retire’ at blog61.com, cause of too many different construction sites I currently have to work on. Have a good time with Christian, best wishes and thanks again!

Cheers, Thomas

Experience Photojournalism

2010/09/20
Thomas Lobenwein

emphas.is is a new and innovative platform for photojournalism. It proposes a unique bond between photojournalists and their audience, and in the process aims to create a new financial model for photojournalism in the 21st century.”

Photo editor Tina Ahrens and photojournalist Karim Ben Khelifa will launch the platform ‘emphas.is’ at the beginning of 2011. Selected stories of International top photographers will be presented for small money by the system of crowd-funding as “a dynamic approach to the problem of sourcing independent funds for quality journalism” (Stephan Mayes, Managing Director VII Photo Agency).

More and more people are interested in high quality photojournalism. This is a first step into the direction of how to earn money for ambitious work in future as well and so to make sure that photographers can keep on doing their work, which is a necessary part of social communication in every community.

‘Ohne Frauen in Ostdeutschland’/'Without Women In East-Germany’ is an intimate story, published on web-magazine bildwerk3, about young men, aged between 20 and 35,  living in East German villages without a woman to share life. Along with the story there is an interview with Hamburg based photographer Gesche Jäger (in German language) on why and how she did this work. See her website for whole story.

“The Black Dog Collective was founded by photographers Simone Alexandra and Kim W. Catton and has it’s base in Denmark. The purpose of Black Dog is bringing photographers together, showcasing up-and-coming artists and forming a network from which like-minded people can share their passion of photography”.

So far the ‘about’-page of Black Dog Collective. What is hidden behind this self-description is not less than wonderful photography, exciting projects and real enthusiasm. I am hooked. Check it out and you will stay tuned.

nick´s lunch box

James Pomerantz is a New York based photographer who allows himself to walk through different styles of photography. He works on documentary topics as well as on artist style pieces. On his website you can find a story about people living in a war zone along with pictures of highlighted bathing people or the result of melting together shots from a surveillance camera. What I like most is the ‘portrait’ of an aluminum lunch box. Pomerantz is also running a blog where he reports on his adventures of being a photo student (MFA) again: a video, which came under attack cause of showing a Holocaust-survivor, dancing ‘I Will Survive” together with his family in front of different concentration-camps, is presented there and invites you to judge whether it´s offensive or not …
